UO Horizon is a heavily customised Ultima Online freeshard that does not try to recreate a specific official era. Instead it builds its own world on a reimagined take on the Ultima III map, set before the age of Lord British and Blackthorn, and fills it with content written for the shard rather than imported from an expansion. The design pitch is expansion style gameplay with modern systems layered over recognisably classic Ultima Online mechanics, which shows up most clearly in a crafting tree far deeper than the stock one. Seasonal structure carries a lot of the long term play, with leaderboards, achievements and professions resetting on a season cadence and timed world events running on top.

The shard lists itself as a custom modern era with a custom ruleset, not a Trammel, Felucca or pre-Renaissance recreation. The setting is a dark fantasy progression system built to hold both casual and hardcore players, drawing its geography and lore from Ultima III rather than from the Britannia most freeshards ship.
