DayZ Server Wipes: How Often DayZ Servers Wipe and What Gets Reset
What a DayZ server wipe actually resets, why servers wipe, how often community and PvE servers tend to do it, and how to find out a server's wipe policy before you spend weeks on a base.
DayZ server wipes are one of the first things experienced players ask about before joining a new server, and for good reason. A wipe can erase weeks of work: the base you built, the stash you buried, the car you finally repaired. This guide explains what a wipe is in DayZ, how it differs from a restart, why servers wipe, how often DayZ servers wipe in practice, and how PvE servers tend to handle it.

What persistence means in DayZ
DayZ servers save the world between sessions. This is called persistence. When you place a tent, a barrel, a wall or a vehicle, the server stores it, and it is still there after the server restarts or you log out. Your character is saved too: what you carry, your health and where you logged off.
Persistence is what makes DayZ feel like a living world, and it is also what a wipe removes.
What a DayZ server wipe resets
A wipe is a deliberate reset of a server's saved data by the people who run it. What exactly gets reset depends on the type of wipe:
- Storage or base wipe. Tents, barrels, crates, base parts, buried stashes and vehicles are removed. Characters may keep what they carry.
- Character wipe. Player characters are reset, so everyone respawns fresh on the coast.
- Full wipe. Both of the above, plus any other saved world state. The server effectively starts over.
Modded servers can add more layers. If a server has traders, banking or other systems added by mods, a wipe may or may not reset those balances. The server's rules or announcements should say which.
Wipes vs restarts vs item lifetime
These three are often confused:
- Restarts happen regularly, often every few hours, and reload the server. Persistent items come back after a restart. A restart is not a wipe.
- Item lifetime is part of DayZ's loot economy. Items have a lifetime, and things left untouched can eventually despawn. Base parts and storage on many servers stay around as long as players keep interacting with them or keep a territory flag maintained nearby, depending on how the server is configured. Losing an abandoned tent this way is not a wipe either.
- Wipes are deliberate resets decided by the server team.
If your base vanished and nobody announced a wipe, ask in the server's Discord. It may have been raided, it may have despawned, or there may have been a technical problem.
Why DayZ servers wipe
Operators do not usually wipe just for fun. The most common reasons are:
- Major game updates. Big DayZ updates can change items, building or how persistence works, and a clean start avoids bugs from old saved data.
- Mod changes. On modded servers, removing or replacing a mod can leave broken items in storage. A wipe clears them out.
- Map changes. Switching to a different map means starting fresh.
- Performance. Thousands of abandoned items and bases can slow a server down over time.
- A fresh start for the community. On PvP servers in particular, a wipe resets the balance of power so that new players and established groups start on equal footing.
How often do DayZ servers wipe?
There is no single answer, because every community server sets its own policy. In practice, servers tend to fall into a few patterns:
- Scheduled wipes, such as once a month, often on PvP servers that want a regular fresh start.
- Update-driven wipes, done only when a major game update or a big mod change makes it necessary.
- Rare or no wipes, where the operator tries to keep the world going as long as possible and relies on item lifetime to clean up.
Official servers follow their own approach and have sometimes been wiped alongside major game updates. For community servers, the only reliable source is the server itself: its description, its rules and its Discord announcements.
DayZ PvE and wipes
On a DayZ PvE server, the reward is long-term progress: a big base, a full set of gear, a working vehicle collection. Because of that, many PvE communities wipe less often than PvP servers, and some announce wipes well in advance so players can enjoy their builds one last time.
That said, PvE servers still face the same technical reasons to wipe after big updates or mod changes. If you plan to put real time into a PvE base, check three things first:
- Does the server have a stated wipe policy?
- How much notice do players get before a wipe?
- Does a wipe include characters, or only storage and bases?
How to find a server's wipe policy
Most servers publish their wipe policy in one of three places:
- The server description. Many operators mention their wipe schedule or say that wipes only happen with major updates.
- The rules page on their website.
- The Discord announcements channel, which is usually where the next wipe is confirmed.
On our DayZ server list you can search and sort community servers by trending, Discord activity, rating or newest, then open each server's page for its description, website and Discord links, and reviews. Reviews sometimes mention surprise wipes, which is worth knowing before you commit. Keep in mind that Discord activity describes the community, not the number of players in the game, and that Featured and Supreme listings are paid placements that may appear first.
A short checklist before you build
- Read the server description for a wipe schedule.
- Check the rules for what a wipe resets.
- Look at past wipe announcements in the Discord.
- Ask how much notice players get.
- Build to match: on a server that wipes monthly, a modest base you can enjoy quickly beats a fortress you finish the day before the wipe.
Wipes are part of DayZ life. Knowing a server's policy before you start means a wipe is a fresh start you expected, not a nasty surprise.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the server. Some community servers wipe on a fixed schedule, such as monthly, others wipe only when a major game update or a big mod change requires it, and a few try to avoid wipes entirely. The server's description, rules or Discord is the only reliable source for a specific server's policy.
