Searching for games like WoW usually means one of three things. You miss a specific version of World of Warcraft, you want a new MMORPG that gives you the same feeling of questing with friends, or you want a lighter way to scratch the MMO itch without committing your evenings. This guide covers all three, in that order.

A quick note before we start: this is not a ranking. We do not name a "best" server, and nothing below is a paid placement. Where we link to server lists, Featured and Supreme listings on those pages are paid and may appear first, so compare the details yourself.

WoW private servers, by style

For many players, the game most like WoW is WoW itself, as it was in a particular expansion. That is what private servers offer: fan-run realms that emulate an older version of the game, each with its own rules, rates and community. They are independent projects with no connection to Blizzard, and characters never transfer between realms or to the official game.

Private servers fall into three broad styles. The World of Warcraft server list lets you filter by expansion and compare listed rates, reviews and Discord activity across all of them.

Classic and blizzlike realms

Blizzlike realms try to reproduce the original game as faithfully as possible, usually with 1x experience rates and original mechanics. They are where you go to relive the slow levelling, the long walks between towns and the dungeon groups formed in chat.

If your memories start and end with the original game, the Classic Era server list narrows the directory to Vanilla and Classic-style realms. Expect a time investment: reaching maximum level on a 1x realm takes weeks of regular play, which is exactly the point for most people who choose one.

Progressive realms

Progressive realms release content in phases. A realm might open with only the early raids available and unlock the next tier months later, so the whole community moves through the expansion together, much like the original release.

Wrath of the Lich King is one of the most popular expansions for this style, and the WotLK server list gathers those realms in one place. Progressive servers suit players who want structure and a shared timeline, and who enjoy being part of a server's first clear of a raid.

Custom and fun servers

At the other end are custom realms. They might raise experience rates so you reach the end game in a weekend, add new races, items or zones, or build the whole server around PvP. Some keep a classic base and add small quality-of-life changes; others are barely recognisable as the original game.

Custom servers are a good fit if you have played the original content many times and want something new on top of it. Read the description and reviews on each listing carefully, because "custom" covers everything from small tweaks to complete overhauls, and the in-game shop rules matter more on these realms.

Before you pick a realm

Whichever style you choose, a few checks save a lot of frustration:

  • Discord activity is community context. The numbers shown on listings describe the server's Discord community, not how many players are logged in to the game right now.
  • Read the shop rules. Most realms are free and fund themselves through donations. Some stores sell only cosmetics; others sell items that affect progression.
  • Download from the source. Get the client from the link on the operator's own website, and use a unique password.
  • Check the team's history. A brand-new realm can be exciting, but an established team with a public roadmap is a safer place to invest months.

Other MMORPGs with a similar feel

If you want a new world rather than an old version of Azeroth, these long-running, officially published MMORPGs share a lot of WoW's DNA: quests, group dungeons, raids, crafting and a large world to explore. They are listed in no particular order.

Final Fantasy XIV. Square Enix's MMORPG is the closest match for players who loved WoW's raids and story. It is subscription-based, with a free trial that covers a large part of the game, and it puts more weight on a single long narrative than WoW does.

The Elder Scrolls Online. Set in the Elder Scrolls universe, ESO lets you explore most of the world at your own pace thanks to level scaling. It is buy-to-play with an optional subscription, and it appeals to players who enjoyed WoW's questing more than its raiding.

Guild Wars 2. ArenaNet's MMORPG has no subscription, and its core game is free to play. Dynamic world events replace much of the traditional quest log, and large-scale PvP is a major part of the game. It is a good choice if you want to drop in and out without a monthly fee.

The Lord of the Rings Online. LOTRO is one of the older MMORPGs still running, with a slower, story-driven pace through Middle-earth. It is free to play with an optional VIP subscription, and its atmosphere will feel familiar to anyone who misses the early days of WoW.

EverQuest. One of the games that shaped WoW in the first place. EverQuest is still online and free to play with an optional membership. It is far less forgiving than WoW, which is exactly why some veterans go back to it.

Each of these has its own business model, in-game store and expansion history, so check the current terms on the publisher's website before you start.

WoW-like in your browser

Sometimes the problem is not which MMORPG to play but finding the time for one. That is the gap idle MMORPGs try to fill, and it is the idea behind World of Idlecraft, an idle MMORPG made by Nostalgic.

World of Idlecraft is built around the feel of classic MMOs, but it is not a private server and not a copy of any official game. You lead a party of three heroes, a Warrior, a Mage and a Priest, and choose between two factions, Dawn and Ember. You decide the strategy: which gear to equip, how to spend talents and where to quest or run dungeons. Combat itself is automatic, and fighting, gathering and crafting keep going while the game is closed. Progress is permanent, with no seasons or wipes.

It runs in the browser and is free. Right now the game is open for pre-registration, and closed alpha places are offered in small batches to pre-registered players, so you will not be able to jump straight in today. If an idle MMORPG sounds like a good fit for your schedule, pre-registering keeps your rewards in your free Nostalgic account for when your batch opens.

Nostalgic also hosts other browser games on its Play page, including an idle RPG and a classic Ragnarok Online experience, if you want something to play in the meantime.

Which one should you choose?

  • You miss a specific expansion: start with the WoW server list and filter by that expansion.
  • You want the full launch experience again: look at progressive realms, especially on WotLK.
  • You want a new world with a long future: try one of the officially published MMORPGs above, most of which have a free entry point.
  • You have less time than you used to: an idle MMORPG like World of Idlecraft keeps your progress moving between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on what you miss. If you want World of Warcraft itself in an older form, a WoW private server on the expansion you remember is the closest match. If you want a different world with similar quests, dungeons and raids, long-running MMORPGs such as Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2, The Elder Scrolls Online and The Lord of the Rings Online are the usual picks.
