Akara Essex is a heavily customized Ultima Online shard run by RahvinTheEvil out of Essex, Connecticut. Its defining idea is that the leveling never really stops: characters climb to level 2000, and every piece of equipment a character carries levels independently up to 200. Each level awards specialization points, so two players wearing the same sword can end up with two very different weapons by the time they are finished with them. The shard is tagged as PvP and stacks a large amount of custom content on top of the standard Ultima Online ruleset, including its own map regions, its own crafting materials and a rune based spell system that is earned through quests rather than bought.

Akara Essex does not present itself as a recreation of a particular Ultima Online era. It is a custom shard whose ruleset is built around its leveling system and its PvP tag, with custom map regions such as Avalon, Avalon Square and Essex Square sitting alongside the familiar world.

Levelable Gear: Weapons, armor, jewelry and clothing all gain levels of their own, up to 200 each.
Nine Akara Runes: Nine runes are earned through custom champion spawns with quests, and each one carries five spells, among them the Lightning, Void and Fire rune spells.
Custom Champion Spawns: The shard runs its own champion spawn encounters, tied to quests, as the route into the rune system.
Mounts: Players can ride a sphinx, an air elemental, a cow or a skeletal dragon.
Races and Evolution Dragons: The shard adds playable races and an evolution dragon system on top of standard character creation.
Custom Crafting: Runic hammers, fletcher tools, tinker tools and sewing kits are joined by custom ores, woods and leathers.
Farming: Crop fields and farmable spawns give a gathering loop that sits outside combat.
Runespells and Blowdarts: Custom weapon and spell types, blowdart guns among them, extend the standard Ultima Online combat kit.
