Frequently Asked Questions
What is a World of Warcraft private server?▾
A World of Warcraft private server is a community-run, free-to-play version of World of Warcraft hosted independently from the official publisher. Players run the original client and connect to these servers to enjoy the game with custom rates, classic expansions, or unique features. Most World of Warcraft private servers listed on Nostalgic.gg are completely free — donations are optional and almost always limited to cosmetics or convenience items.
How do I connect to a World of Warcraft private server?▾
On Nostalgic.gg, click any World of Warcraft server to open its detail page, then use the "Play" or "Connect" button. You will be taken to the server's official site where you'll find the client download, registration form and detailed connection guide. Most World of Warcraft private servers also publish step-by-step setup videos and have an active Discord with helpers ready to walk new players through their first login.
Are World of Warcraft private servers safe to play?▾
The reputable World of Warcraft private servers listed on Nostalgic.gg have been running for months or years with active communities — that public track record is the strongest safety signal. Always download the client only from the server's official site, run a virus scan, and never share your account password. Real Discord population (which we display live) and verified community reviews help you tell legitimate World of Warcraft servers from scams.
What's the difference between Vanilla and TBC World of Warcraft servers?▾
Vanilla, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm, MoP, Legion, Retail-Like are the main expansions players choose between for World of Warcraft private servers. Each expansion changes the meta, balance, and content available — for example, Vanilla servers usually focus on a specific era of the game, while TBC servers include later content. Use Nostalgic.gg's filters to find World of Warcraft servers by expansion (Vanilla, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm, MoP, Legion, Retail-Like) and pick the era that matches your nostalgia.
How do I choose the best World of Warcraft private server for me?▾
Start with the live Discord population on each Nostalgic.gg listing — it's the single best signal of a healthy World of Warcraft server. Then narrow down by expansion (Vanilla, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm, MoP, Legion, Retail-Like), rates, and language. Read the community reviews, check the 30-day population trend to make sure the server isn't dying, and join the Discord before you commit. The best World of Warcraft private server is always the one whose community matches your playstyle.
What does the Discord online count mean on World of Warcraft server listings?▾
Every World of Warcraft server listing on Nostalgic.gg shows the live number of online members in that server's official Discord — pulled directly from Discord's API, not self-reported. It's a far more reliable activity signal than the player counts servers report themselves, since those are often inflated. A World of Warcraft private server with thousands of online Discord members is almost always actively played and well-moderated.
